These thoughts have haunted me for months now. Going through a full season racing too many races and not training enough, yet beating all my PR’s from the previous season…that sure makes you want to race more!! This past year I had less and less time to train, or less time to organize my training. So, naturally, on the weekends that were freed up from kids and work…I raced. 17 races in one season ranging from fast 5k’s to 3 day (not 3 days in a row straight, but a weekend consisting of 3 different trail running races. One on eahc of the days) trail running race weekend. All the races were great fun and I had a fun season doing some idffernet training things…much more urban, and that was cool as heck. Problem here lyes much deeper than a good on paper season. An injury to my knee cap many months prior to the season start had haunted me throughout my training and racing. I put off getting it checked out for numerous reasons and when I finally had it looked at I found out it was Bursitis. No big deal, right? Well…my knee is “feeling” better as far as the piercing pain goes, but it continues to swell, fluid builds up and then the hopes of hopes and dreams in the tri community keep feeling so distant. I’m not a pescimist, I’m just not seeing the value here.

After watching Race Across the Sky (leadville 100 race movie) I saw how a woman who had been hit by a car while on a training ride with a friend suffered torn ligaments in her knee, torn miniscus (sp), torn gluteous maximus among broken ribs and what not, still managed to train with casts and braces on all over her body. I don’t know her whole story…but this brings me to my question:

Do you train through your injuries (obviously depending on what it is), wait for them to , supposidly, heal and then ease into it…? I know I should go see a physical therapist and get some sort of scedule going..its just so costly, yada, yada, yada. I want to be able to train through this so badly but don’t want to prolong the agony and find out in March that i can’t race this next season cause I was, well, stupid in my habits of running, riding, swimming.

Anyone had to deal with training through bursitis of the knee. What kind of issues did you face in the process? Any stories of full rehab and what not?

Much obliged…

Bishop
